Despite a slowdown in the U.S. economy, worldwide revenue for consumer electronics will grow nearly 10% percent this year, hitting the $700 billion mark by 2009, according to new data from the Arlington-based Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) and the GfK Group. Led by consumers in countries such as Brazil, Russia, India and China, sales of electronics is expected to rise $42 billion next year over 2008 levels. In fact, by 2009, China will account for nearly 15% of global consumer electronics revenue, trailing only North America (22%) and Western Europe (16%). Topping the list of most purchased items will be GPS units, laptop computers and mobile phones. </content>

Many households in Africa and Asia shell-out more on food and fuel as a share of total spending and so are disproportionately hit by rising prices. But in some poor countries fuel subsidies help to ease the pain. </content>
