Could high fuel prices benefit u?
Note: Though it may seem like a shocking idea, high fuel prices may actually have some benefits for our society as a whole.

World Atlas of the Night Sky
Note: This is an image of the amount of light pollution that can be found around the world in the night sky. Clearly the highest percentage of light pollution can be found in industrial nations, mostly coming from the US, Europe, West Asia.

In Praise of Darkness
Note: For the first time in human history, the brilliant, awe-inspiring canopy of the night sky is being stolen from us by the down-to-earth glare from artificial light.

Human Consumption vs Nature and Wildlife
Note: Often time, climate change and global warming are only discussed in reference to humans and their world; however these factors are also having very negative effects on wildlife.

Total Lunar Eclipse Tonight
Note: Tonight (at least if you are living in the right part of the World and if the weather cooperates) you will be able to observe a rare total lunar eclipse.

Multiple Solar Prominences
Note: Each of these solar prominences is larger than our entire planet. These are some truly massive events.

Upcoming Total Lunar Eclipse
Note: Shortly after sunset on Wednesday, February the 20th, skywatchers across the Americas will be treated to a sweet total lunar eclipse. This will be the last total lunar eclipse until 2010 (so start praying for clear skies).

U.Va. Student Preaches the Power of Darkness
Note: For more than 4,000 years, poets, artists and stargazers have found inspiration in the nighttime heavens. Not so much anymore, fears Jennifer Barlow. Widespread light pollution is increasingly diminishing the view of the starry night sky. "We're all missing out," said Barlow, a 20-year-old University of Virginia student and anti-light pollution activist. "The night sky is so beautiful. It shouldn't be wasted."

Fighting Light Pollution Blog Archive Landscape Lighting Buried In The Snow (and still on)
Note: Talk about mindless energy waste. These guys have a handful of landscape lights that are on from dusk to dawn even though they're buried under 2 feet of snow!

Starry Night Lights Joins Energy Star Program
Note: Starry Night Lights is proud to announce its participation in the US Government’s Energy Star Lighting program. Given our focus on preserving the environment in general, and the night sky in particular, it only makes sense for us to participate in this program.

Got A New Telescope… Now What?
Note: Many people find themselves in the possession of a new telescope this time of year. For some, it is the fulfillment of a dream, for others, a quite unexpected surprise. If you’re one of these people, you may be wondering to yourself… now what? What in the world am I going to do with this shiny new telescope?

The Illusive Horsehead Nebula
Note: I got my first ever images of IC434, the Horsehead Nebula in the constellation Orion. The Horse Head is the faintest object that I’ve ever attempted to image at mag 10 or so.

Super Energy Efficient LED Light Bulbs
Note: Almost one-fourth of the energy used in homes is used for lighting. Unfortunately, most homes still use the traditional incandescent bulbs invented by Thomas Edison over 100 years ago! These bulbs convert only about 10 percent of the electricity they use to produce light, the other 90 percent is converted into heat.

Moon In The Belt of Venus
Note: What a gorgeous moonrise today. I thought of hiking up to get a better vantage point to capture tonights moonrise. A host of conflicts would prevent that. As it turned out, it really didn’t matter. Moonrise was followed by a spectacular positioning of the (almost) full moon and the Belt of Venus.

Comet Holmes Is Now Bigger Than The Moon!
Note: Comet 17P/Holmes burst onto the astronomy scene just three weeks ago. In that time, its captured the attention of astronomers worldwide. Brightening one million fold literally overnight, the comet has grown steadily as well and now appears larger than the moon!
