Phoenix Camera Snaps Frost on Mars [PIC]
Note: Its getting a little nippy at night on Mars. The Phoenix landers Surface Stereo Imager took this image at 6 a.m. on Sol 79 (August 14, 2008 here on Earth), and a thin layer of water frost is visible on the ground around the landing area. From subsequent images, the frost begins to disappear shortly after this image was taken as the sun rises

Scientists develop 'cure' for common cold
Note: Hundreds of British volunteers are currently testing the drug which could clear up the sniffles within hours and prevent life-threatening infections in asthma and cystic-fibrosis sufferers.Trial results will be released next April and if successful the medication could be on the market within five years. The drug - known as BTA798 - works by latching onto the cold-causing rhinovirus to prevent it breaking into the body's cells

LHC to run first particles in early September
Note: Scientific research usually moves in fits and starts, as missed controls and technical glitches put discovery at the mercy of far too many variables. It's a relatively rare thing to be able to look at a calendar and figure out when progress is going to happen. Those of you interested in the fundamentals of physics, however, can circle a date: on September 10th, the first beams of particles will enter the Large Hadron Collider.
