OpenSocial Now Reaches 350 Million Users, And Growing
Note: Six months ago, OpenSocial was nothing but a list of promised partnerships. But the social network application platform backed by Google has made a lot of progress since then as those partners started to go live with their OpenSocial Apps. First there was MySpace and Orkut, then Hi5, and most recently Friendster.

Note: With a new social approach to advertising, Facebook hopes to present marketers with unique and coveted advertising opportunities, but there's a real risk that Facebook users, who already pretty much ignore ads, will not take kindly to passively shilling with their feeds.

Yahoo Opens Buzz To The Public
Note: Yahoo’s social news site and “meme tracker, Buzz, has opened up its submission process so that any Web site can now be “buzzed.” Much like Digg and other social news sites, Buzz allows users to vote on (buzz) stories to increase their visibility.

Note: Fresh off his record-breaking performance at the Beijing Olympics, Baltimore swimmer Michael Phelps also continues to make giant waves online. As of Tuesday morning, the 23-year-old's Facebook fan page had just over 1 million members.

Note: It's been a while since the Democratic and Republican conventions captured voters' attention by actually deciding who the presidential nominees would be. But this year the parties are fighting to bring back some buzz with high-tech devices they hope will give some excitement to the four-day event.

Social Thing: Ok, so yeah…it’s true! We got acquired…
Note: Two weeks after initial reports surfaced about the deal, Colorado-based Socialthing has confirmed its acquisition by AOL. Socialthing is the developer of a social networking news feed service designed to help users trace the Internet activity of friends. Socialthing, which has been operating in private beta mode since last year, reportedly raised $300,000 in funding last fall.

Last.FM Needs More Than A Redesign To Catch Up To Imeem
Note: Yesterday, CBS sent out a press release touting the success of Last.fm’s month-old redesign, citing a 20 percent increase in unique visitors and a 36 percent increase in total minutes between June and July. Despite a few bugs on the day of launch, the redesign seems to be paying off. But why is CBS so keen on beating its chest when it comes to Last.fm?

Former AOL Exec Lands Funding for News Aggregation Site
Note: Lewis Dvorkin, the former senior vice president of AOL News and Sports, has landed an undisclosed amount of funding for his new venture, an online news network called Public Post, paidContent.org reported. Investors include Forbes Media and Velocity Interactive Group. Dvorkin, who departed AOL in May following eight years at the company, said that the news aggregation site, which isn't yet live, will feature a slate of "knowledgeable" reporters -- including individual journalists, authors, bloggers and documentary filmmakers -- that are a step up from the "citizen journalists" featured on several other sites.
