Travel Insurance
Note: You know how your mother always tells you to wear clean under wear in case you’re in an accident, that’s kind of what travel insurance is like. You have to have it just in case because should something unfortunate happen (cross your fingers, turn in a circle three times to the left and spit on your right shoe for luck) you are really going to want to be covered for it.

washingtonpost.com Launches NFL Discussion Platform: "The League"
Note: With the NFL season scheduled to kick off this weekend, washingtonpost.com, the web site of The Washington Post, said on Tuesday that it has launched a new NFL discussion forum called "The League." The site will offer readers a variety of perspectives on league issues, players, game coverage and key match-ups through daily panels and numerous blogs.

Note: Today Caroline McCarthy posted about a new feature which is being added to Blogger-based blogs and makes them inherently more social. It’s a simple widget-like feature which enables you to view other people in the network that are following that blog.

Note: Facebook has recently launched a new feature that takes aim at life-streaming sites FriendFeed and Twitter. Facebook's Live Feed is an evolved version of its hugely popular News Feed feature.

AMC Asks Twitter To Shut Off “Mad Men” Tweets
Note: The cable network AMC has asked Twitter to shut down feeds inspired by the show “Mad Men.” Twitter users had been able to subscribe to feeds that offered the daily ramblings of virtual employees of the fictional advertising agency Sterling Cooper. It seems AMC did not appreciate the fact that some of the characters had been used to promote products other than the show itself.

Metacafe Adds Community Features
Note: Metacafe has become the first video site to open its metadata for community contributions and editing. The site’s Wikicafe feature is designed to eliminate tag abuse and improve video search and recommendations. Wikicafe allows people to share their knowledge about and passions for particular topics by adding details about the content of a video.

Amazon.com buys Shelfari, a startup for book lovers
Note: Amazon.com is buying Shelfari, a Seattle-based social networking startup for book lovers. Amazon had already owned a portion of the site, which allows groups of people to create virtual bookshelves and share titles with friends.

Hi5 goes mobile: It's a bigger deal than you think
Note: The biggest social networks, like Facebook and MySpace, have operated mobile sites since long before anyone had seen an iPhone. Medium-sized ones are still warming up to it: Hi5, a San Francisco-based company that counts its biggest following in Latin America, formally launched Hi5 Mobile on Tuesday.

Note: Facebook is introducing a way for its members to comment on ads that appear on the site, according to the company’s director of monetization, Tim Kendall. In addition, Facebook is looking into things like advertiser-branded virtual gifts and a way for friends’ actions on fan pages to be distributed in a news feed.
