Tax Delay Fails to Quell Iranian Protest
Note: TEHRAN — A strike in Iran’s traditional bazaars expanded on Sunday despite an order by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to suspend a new tax on sales that ignited the protest more than a week ago. The main entrance to the Grand Bazaar in Tehran was closed, as major traders like carpet and textile merchants joined the jewelers, who had started the strike in Tehran. The strike continued in the traditional bazaars in several other large cities, including Isfahan, where it erupted first on Oct. 4.

Iran celebrates global meltdown
Note: Amidst the financial wreckage around the world, one government is celebrating. Watching the global gnashing of teeth, the Islamic Republic of Iran is enjoying the ride. "We are very happy that America's economy is in jeopardy and they are paying the price for their misdeeds. God is punishing them."

Tehran's Coming Disaster : The next earthquake- Fardad jamali
Note: Last week at the Beyond Persia film festival in San Francisco, Fardad Jamali and I went to the screening of a phenomenal film, "Bam 6.6" a documentary made by Jahangir Golestan-Parast. Jamali is a Safety Expert. Actually he is one the top Industrial Safety, Health, and Emergency Preparedness experts in the US today. He wanted to see the film because it contained a lot of technical footage of the Bam earthquake, footage that has not been readily available to experts like him, to examine details of the rescue procedures used to rescue and retrieve the injured and dead.

Are we alone in the universe? Firouz Naderi
Note: Dr. Firouz Naderi is a proud member of PAAIA. Join PAAIA and help unite our community. Dr. Firouz Naderi has spent most of the last decade managing NASA programs in pursuit of a most fundamental question - are we alone in the universe? The contribution our civilization makes to answer this question, he says, will be the legacy for which we will be remembered even centuries from now after transient issues of today are long forgotten:

Barack Obama's link to the mullah's of Iran.: All My Friends, this is very important, please take the time to read it.
Note: This election has me very worried. So many things to consider. About a year ago I would have voted for Obama. I have changed my mind three times since than. I watch all the news channels, jumping from one to another. I must say this drives my husband crazy. But, I feel if you view MSNBC, CNN, and Fox News, you might get some middle ground to work with. About six months ago, I started thinking 'where did the money come from for Obama'. I have four daughters who went to College, and we were middle class, and money was tight. We (including my girls) worked hard and there were lots of student loans.I started looking into Obama's life

Giving Until It Hurts - 30 years of deceit and treachery....
Note: In response to a casual question, U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates dropped a historical bombshell, an offhand remark telling more about how the Middle East works than 100 books. And a former Marine commander adds an equally big revelation about long-ago events quite relevant for today. Almost thirty years ago, President Jimmy Carter tried to show what a nice guy he was by pressing the Shah not to crush the revolutionaries. After the monarch fell, National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski met top officials of the new Islamist regime to pledge U.S. friendship to the government controlled by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. At the time, I wrote that by approaching some of the milder radicals, the administration frightened the more militant ones. U.S.-Iran relations must be smashed, they concluded, lest Washington back their rivals. In fact, as we'll see in a moment, the Carter administration offered to back Khomeini himself.

Shiraz Students Jeer and Heckle Larijani
Note: Iran's head of the Islamic Assembly, Ali Larijani was jeered and heckled by Shiraz university students at the Fajr Hall yesterday, where he was invited to speak by the hardline students. Herasat (Informers) agents at the university as well intelligence ministry operators were there in large numbers and had declared no placards or mobile phones were allowed to be carried into the hall. Everyone was searched before being allowed in. Once the students entered the hall, they saw Baseej students who had already occupied the front seats.

Memo to "Dizzy McCain": Ahmadinejad Does Not Run Iran
Note: I know I've made this point before, but it means something more when Foreign Affairs puts out an article essentially dedicated to disproving the idea that Ahmadinejad is the most powerful man in Iran. Akbar Ganji, an Iranian journalist and dissident who spent six years imprisoned in Iran writes:

Iranians' interrupted freedom
Note: " There is little outward sign of a credit-crunch in Maydon Shoosh; the record prices of Iran's petrodollar exports (the country had reserves of $175 billion by mid-2008) mean that there is plenty of cash about - coupled with a desire to spend it as quickly as possible to get the better of rapidly rising inflation. Iran's central bank estimates that consumer spending is keeping pace - and needs to, for the official rate of inflation in September 2008 is said to be 29% (though experts maintain that it is even higher). The Iranian daily newspaper Kargozaran (29 September 2008) showed that the cost of a basket of forty-five staple foods had increased by nearly 50% in a single month."

GRAND THEFT _ ‘Looting’ of Iran’s central bank assets
Note: We are worried that Mr Bahmani may be too soft vis-à-vis the government,” said one banker. The government recently urged parliament to grant $15bn (€11bn, £8.6bn) from the fund to recapitalise state-owned banks.Mr Mazaheri put in place what he called “six locks” on the treasury – barriers to limit banks access to central bank funds – in his one year in office.“People’s money should be distinguished from the government’s money ... money with banks does not belong to the government, [rather] it belongs to depositors,” Mr Mazaheri said and reminded the government that “creating jobs through injecting money is a mirage”. He accused the government of fanning inflation, which stands at 27.6 per cent, by injecting cash, while “all people know the government is able to decrease inflation”.

Iranian shopkeepers strike over VAT: Bazaar all over Iran Shut Down
Note: TEHRAN (AFP) - Iranian shopkeepers, known as bazaaris, in the provincial capitals of Isfahan, Mashhad and Tabriz have staged strikes to protest against the introduction of value added tax (VAT), newspapers reported on Wednesday. Shops in the bazaar of the central city of Isfahan, Iran's third largest city, have been shut for several days to protest against the 3.0 percent VAT tax implemented by the government of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the moderate Etemad said.Kargozaran, also a moderate newspaper, said around 3,000 merchants gathered on Monday outside the Isfahan governor general's office to protest against the new tax, introduced on September 22.
