Note: The news suggests the world's largest software maker may be giving up efforts to rehabilitate its often-maligned Vista operating system, which was released worldwide in January 2007.

Note: Apple has unveiled its greenest Macs yet, it's cut down on bulky packaging, it's removed some of the worst nasties from its products and it's now happy to take old computing kit when you buy new Apple kit. So how green is Apple and is there anything we can do to make it greener still?

The First Pirate Bust Of 2009
Note: It's not a happy new year for one UK resident who was busted for piracy. Four computers with burners and more than 1,000 illegally copied games were seized in the raid - including 700 Xbox 360 games, 300 Wii titles and 100 PlayStation 2 games.

The Science Behind Jobs' Hormonal Imbalance
Note: Apple Inc. CEO Steve Jobs has addressed rumors concerning his weight loss in a statement to the press. In a statement, Jobs said, after further testing, my doctors think they have found the cause--a hormone imbalance that has been robbing me of the proteins my body needs to be healthy. This is sad, but better than a relapse!

Open source Mono framework brings C# to iPhone and Wii
Note: Mono, an open source implementation of the .NET runtime, is being used to build games for the iPhone and Wii. Ars looks at how static compilation has made it possible for Mono applications to meet Apple's requirements for inclusion in the App Store.

Windows 7 Beta 1 shows off new task bar, more UI goodies
Note: Windows 7 is a solid, fast-performing, stable operating system that appears to be just about fully baked and ready for prime time. It appears to be feature-complete, unlike Vista. Based on the stability and speed of this beta, don't be surprised if Microsoft Corp. releases Windows 7 before 2010 rolls around.

Note: Reports today that as early as this month, Microsoft will begin reducing its workforce. Xbox 360 purveyor said to be reducing workforce significantly as early as this month; initial estimates of 15,000 layoffs labeled "grossly exaggerated."

Toy trains 'Star Wars' fans to use The Force
Note: The Force Trainer (expected to be priced at $90 to $100) comes with a headset that uses brain waves to allow players to manipulate a sphere within a clear 10-inch-tall training tower, analogous to Yoda and Luke Skywalker's abilities in the Star Wars films.

Note: It's probably not an exaggeration to say that Windows 7 is Microsoft's most important release of its operating system in a decade. That's not necessarily because of its advances, or what it does for Windows users, but rather because of what it means for Microsoft as a company.

Mininova's Torrent Downloads Double to 7 Billion in a Year
Note: The BitTorrent popularity surge is still underway, with more users discovering that its the fastest way to transfer large files online. One of the most frequently visited torrent sites, Mininova, has seen the number of torrent downloads double from 3.5 billion to 7 billion during 2008, and this download rate is still increasing.
