Why Soft Drinks Contribute to Obesity in America
Note:
Is it a coincidence that the introduction of high fructose corn syrup in the 1970s coincided with a marked rise in obesity in the United States? Thus, leading to speculations that there might be a causal connection between High Fructose Corn Syrup consumption and weight gain.

Travel Insurance
Note:
You know how your mother always tells you to wear clean under wear in case you’re in an accident, that’s kind of what travel insurance is like. You have to have it just in case because should something unfortunate happen (cross your fingers, turn in a circle three times to the left and spit on your right shoe for luck) you are really going to want to be covered for it.

Asthma is a chronic disease, chronic disease
Note:
Asthma is a chronic disease whose prevalence is increasing; mortality from asthma more than doubled from 1979 to 1994 [10]. Personal control of this disease involves many variables from not smoking, avoidance of triggers, and appropriate use of medications. A key intervention that provides this control is daily monitoring with peak flow meters (PFM), which provides feedback
regarding the severity of bronchospasm. The patient has three PFM zones (green, yellow, red).

Meditation slows AIDS progression
Note:
WASHINGTON: Meditation may slow the worsening of AIDS in just a few weeks, perhaps by affecting the immune system, US researchers reported. If the findings are borne out in larger studies, it could offer a cheap and pleasant way to help people battle the incurable and often fatal condition, the team at the University of California Los Angeles said on Thursday.

Why do females gain weight?
Note:
Girls and young women who devote much time to the internet, get too little sleep or regularly drink alcohol are more likely than their peers to put on excess weight, a new study suggests. The researchers, who followed more than 5,000 girls between 14 and 21 years old for one year, found that the more spare time girls spent on the internet, the more their body mass index (BMI) increased.

Do you think overweight children come with parents who are also overweight
Note:
In a way it is endorsement to the children that their eating habits and lifestyle habits are acceptable. Just like any of us what better role models than your parents. If they snack and eat unhealthily then the children will as well.
However having said this, there are other considerations to take into account. For example there is some tentative evidence that people who are obese are genetically pre-disposed to it. So if this were the case, these families may have an underlying reason for their weight problems. This does not necessarily mean that there is nothing that they can do to lose weight.

Is it Wrong for Doctors to Sleep with their Patients?
Note:
For doctors, having sex with a patient is completely off-limits. Yet research in the US has shown that one-in-10 family doctors has had a sexual relationship with a patient, and 40% of med students said if they were on a remote island and an attractive patient asked them out, theyd say yes.

Pregnancy and Diabetes
Note:
If you are a diabetic and you want to get pregnant, work with your OB/GYN doctor and your diabetes doctor to be sure you are in the best shape possible at least three to six months before you conceive. Then be sure you are followed regularly by both physicians so that you remain healthy during your pregnancy and after delivery. During your pregnancy you should monitor your diet and exercise program and look for signs of imbalance in your blood sugar, as pregnancy can sometimes wreak havoc on your regular routine and your insulin levels.

Family breast cancer may not be risky
Note:
New research suggests that just because a woman has family members with breast cancer, it does not mean that she should undergo early screening.According to the report, there are certain factors doctors can look for to determine whether early screening is advisable. "Breast cancer is very common. Familial clustering is also rather common," Geertruida H de Bock, the study's first author, said. "About 25-30% of breast cancer is family clustered, but the (rate) of breast cancer in the family is not very useful in predicting if you will get breast cancer."

Lower cholesterol early for a long life
Note:
The best approach to reducing incidence of coronary heart disease, which kills millions every year, is by lowering cholesterol early on, according to University of California researchers. Pioneering lipid researcher Daniel Steinberg, professor emeritus of medicine, University of California and colleagues Christopher Glass and Joseph Witztum, dismissed current approaches to lowering cholesterol as "too little, too late".
With a large body of evidence proving that low cholesterol levels equate with low rates of heart disease, "our long-term goal should be to alter our lifestyle accordingly, beginning in infancy or early childhood" and "instituting a low-saturated fat, low-cholesterol diet in infancy is perfectly safe, without adverse effects..."
