Note: Like the generals in Burma who knew about the cyclone and purposefully did not inform the population, it seems that the Chinese regime was well aware of the catastrophe which its population was about to be subjected to. It seems that they don’t care about the population.
Or worse, are their deaths just a studied method in containing population growth?

Note: Athletes in the Beijing Olympics should use the platform they provide to speak out against China's continued human rights abuses, according to John Amaechi, an ambassador for London's successful 2012 bid who today takes on a similar role with Amnesty International.
Amaechi, who was raised in Stockport but made his name at the pinnacle of American sport in the National Basketball Association, will travel to Beijing as Amnesty's official sporting ambassador.

Note: If we thought the crackdown in Tibet was due to the upcoming Olympics, we underestimated the Chinese dictatorship. They have plans.
In an interview with the Guardian on 23 May, the Dalia Lama has declared to have received information from a "military source" in Tibet that after the Olympics, the Chinese government has a plan; “1 million Chinese are going to settle in the autonomous region of Tibet… Then the very basis of the idea of autonomy becomes meaningless.” Tibetans in Tibet have also informed the Dalai Lama that larges pieces of land have been marked out in the last 2 years, seemingly for purposes of construction.

Note: Sudan: The Sudanese government renewed its use of scorched earth tactics and continued to arrest suspected rebels in Khartoum. All sides have threatened increased violence in Darfur and central Sudan, while the shadow of a renewed North-South civil war looms on the horizon.
Democratic Republic of Congo: Violence against civilians continues, but clashes between armed groups are declining. The presence of extremist Hutu militias and increasing scandal among UN peacekeepers threatens this promising progress.
Somalia: The security situation is deteriorating as civilians are increasingly caught between government troops and rebel forces. Conflict parties have increased belligerent rhetoric as the prospective peace talks broke down.
Central African Republic and Democratic Republic of Congo: Former Congolese Vice President Jean-Pierre Bemba has been arrested on charges of war crimes committed in the CAR and DRC.

Note: We have analyzed the Chinese regime’s reaction to the disaster of Sichuan.
The artificial compassionate and open attitude of the Chinese Premier, who called himself "Grandpa Wen Jiabao," as well as the astute division of roles between himself and Hu Jintao, seem to be connected to the knowledge that natural disasters have always been signs of devastating political impact in China.
In China, natural disasters have often heralded the leader’s ruin and loss of power.
The cause-effect mechanism is as follows:
Decadence of the dynasty- natural disaster –revolt of the peasants – end of the dynasty
The end of the Eastern Han dynasty is often related to the flooding of the Yellow River (30-29 B.C.).

Note: After the incident of Labrang monastery - in which over a dozen monks (whose whereabouts are now unknown) shouted out for the return of the Dalai Lama and denounced human rights abuses in front of a "selected" group of journalists - a few monks who have been able to escape have reported to the Tibetan government in exile in Dharamsala that monasteries have been surrounded and water supply has been cut off. The monks are prevented from going out to get food or water. They are left to die of hunger and thirst.

Commentary, The Bangkok Post
15 May 2008
We thought we had it bad. Our 2004 tsunami, however, pales in comparison with the cyclone disaster in Burma which has killed more than 100,000 people. And more are still dying due to lack of timely rescue and aid.
We are frustrated with our half-baked democracy. But however imperfect our system is, our open society enables aid to reach the victims of natural disasters quickly. And no matter how unhappy we are with top-down assistance, inadequate long-term support and the authorities' inability to solve land rights disputes between the tsunami victims and greedy landlords, at least the help was there at the crucial moment, saving survivors from severe injury, disease and hunger. This is not happening in Burma.
