Lebanese army helicopter hit and pilot killed
| World
| Reuters
Note:
BEIRUT (Reuters) - A Lebanese army helicopter made a forced landing after being hit by gunfire in south Lebanon on Thursday, a Lebanese security source said, adding that the pilot had been killed.
No other details were immediately available and it was not clear who had fired on the helicopter, which was forced down near the southern village of Sujoud -- north of a zone where U.N. peacekeepers have a mandate to operate.
The army was expected to issue a statement, the security source said. The army deployed in the southern border region, along with a reinforced U.N. peacekeeping force, after Israel's war with Lebanese Hezbollah guerrillas in 2006.
Ten Lebanese soldiers were among 15 people killed in a bomb attack in the northern city of Tripoli this month. There have been no claims of responsibility for the attack.

Biden's Blink on Iran - will be his downfall - unless he changes
Note:
In selecting Joseph Biden as his running mate, Barack Obama acknowledged the importance of foreign affairs to this year's election. His Web site trumpeted Biden as "an expert on foreign policy" and a man "who has stared down dictators." - As chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Biden is well versed in policy debates and carefully choreographed trips. But his record on the Islamic Republic of Iran -- perhaps the chief national security threat facing the next president -- suggests a persistent and dangerous judgment deficit. Biden's unyielding pursuit of "engagement" with Iran for more than a decade has made it easier for Tehran to pursue its nuclear program, while his partisan obsession with thwarting the Bush administration has led him to oppose tough sanctions against hard-liners in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

Shuttle replacement crashes in landing test
Note:
Nasa officials were left embarrassed after the parachutes designed to slow down the capsule carrying the Orion crew back to earth failed to open properly during a mock landing. Instead of touching down gently in the Arizona desert, the 25 tonne spacecraft, which was an empty replica of the real thing, plummeted 25,000 feet before smashing into the ground in a cloud of dust. The failure has raised questions among critics in the space industry about whether the Orion spacecraft is a suitable replacement for the shuttle, which the US space agency plans to retire from use in 2010.
