Team Cyprus Move To Undo “The Video”
Note: A group of twenty or so tech elite were partying 1999-style in Cyprusthis last week, and posted a lip sync video of the Journey song “Don’t Stop Believing” a couple of days ago. Among the group were Brittany Bohnet of Google, Mike Hudack of Blip.tv, Dave Morin and Aaron Sittig of Facebook, Sam Lessin of Drop.io and Jessica Vascellaro, the Wall Street Journal’s Silicon Valley beat reporter. Team Cyprus: Alcohol + Bad Judgement + Really. Poor Timing The video was released just as Silicon Valley really began falling apart and the UnParty began in earnest. - eBay’s 10% layoffs. , Google's stock nosedive. , Yahoo’s self destruction. , VC’s. bunkering. down. , etc. And more than a few people thought the ostentatious partying was a little, ahem, tasteless in light of the meltdown back home. Now that video has been taken private. , which is what it should have been marked as in the first place. But it’s too late - the video has spread to YouTube and other sites, and won’t be disappearing again. As I said yesterday, fair or not the video video will always be associated with the end of Web 2.0.

Rule Change Lets Members of U.S. Congress Post to YouTube
Note: Following a rule change adopted last week, members of U.S. Congress may now post content on Internet sites outside of the .gov domain for official purposes -- meaning they can now syndicate their videos on YouTube and other third-party sites, The Washington Post reported.

Viacom Sets Distribution Deals With Veoh, Imeem
Note: Viacom has announced plans to distribute short video clips and full-length series episodes via Michael Eisner’s Veoh and social networking and music hub www.imeem.com. The MTVN outlets involved include Comedy Central, MTV and Nickelodeon.

Note: According to data from comScore Video Metrix, thePlatform served a combined total of 329 million video views in July. That would make the company the third largest online video provider, behind Google (including YouTube) and Fox Interactive Media (including MySpace). ThePlatform counts Comcast, Gannett, BBC, Time Warner Cable and Associated Press among its clients.

YouTube Introduces Click-To-Buy Ads
Note: YouTube has launched “click-to-buy” ads that give video viewers the option to buy products featured in the clips they watch. The ads will include links to buy MP3s and games from iTunes and Amazon.com. Only authorized clips will include the links, which appear on a small bar under the video.

Hulu Streaming Next Two Presidential Debates Live
Note: The News Corp.-NBC Universal joint venture Hulu will go live for the first time since it launched a year ago. Hulu will stream the presidential debates tonight and on Oct. 15 via the site’s on-demand service.

Slide Sets Deals With Time Warner, CBS, Comcast
Note: Slide has announced that it has forged distribution partnerships with Time Warner’s Warner Bros., Comcast’s E! Entertainment channel and others. Using a new Slide video service, users of social-networking sites like Facebook and MySpace will be able to view clips from shows for free.

CBS’s TV.com Picks Up A YouTube Series
Note: After just five days on YouTube, “Easy To Assemble” has been picked up by CBS in a deal that will see new episodes of the show running exclusively on www.tv.com for a week after each release, starting Oct. 29. The IKEA-backed show created by and starring Illeana Douglas garnered more than 300,000 views since its debut Monday. This marks TV.com’s first foray into original scripted content.

Metacafe Continues To Show Rapid Growth
Note: According to data from comScore, Metacafe strengthened its position as the world’s leading independent online video site with 37.1 million unique monthly viewers worldwide and 7.4 million unique monthly viewers in the U.S. during August. Worldwide, traffic to Metacafe in Aug. 2008 grew 37.7% compared with Aug. 2007, including an 8.7% increase over the previous month. This makes Metacafe the third-largest video site in the world overall.
