Note: NEW YORK - Oil prices closed at their lowest level in two weeks Thursday, tumbling below $94 a barrel on doubts that a revamped financial bailout plan will be enough to avoid a protracted economic slump and revive dwindling U.S. energy demand.
The declines came a day after the Senate overwhelmingly approved the rescue package. The bill now goes to the House of Representatives for an expected vote Friday; House lawmakers stunned investors Monday by rejecting the bailout plan, although Senators added $100 billion in tax breaks and other sweeteners in a bid to win over enough dissenting House votes.

Posted by BAHRAMERAD, at 01:51AM 10/03/08 and by 1 others: British Ambassador Sir Nigel Sheinwald called Barack Obama 'liberal'
Note: Sir Nigel Sheinwald, Britain's Ambassador in Washington, was last night thrust into political controversy after the leak to a newspaper of a seven-page candid assessment he delivered on Barack Obama. His letter to Downing Street, written earlier this summer ahead of the Democratic nominee's trip to Europe, contains a level of criticism that will be deeply embarrassing to the Government. He describes Mr Obama's "decidedly liberal" voting record in the Senate where "the main impression is of someone who was finding his feet, and then got diverted by his presidential ambitions". Some of his comments, suggesting there is "little track record to refer back to" and that charges of elitism or being aloof "are not entirely unfair" may be seized upon by John McCain's campaign which has consistently sought to portray Mr Obama as inexperienced and out-of-touch with working class voters.

Note: This video is an informative look at the factors that are causing our current financial and economic crisis. It discusses policy changes 13 years ago that unleashed the sub-prime mortgage-backed securities market, which accelerated prices erratically, inviting speculation and loose lending practices which were both condoned and encouraged by existing regulation and carried out by risk-blind executives and Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Aside from ripping the corporate goons in the media, please be respectful in your comments. Thanks.
Posted by BAHRAMERAD, at 12:26AM 10/03/08 : The Political Nature of the Economic Crisis
Note: Classical economists like Adam Smith and David Ricardo referred to their discipline as “political economy.” Smith’s great work, “The Wealth of Nations,” was written by the man who held the chair in moral philosophy at the University of Glasgow. This did not seem odd at the time and is not odd now. Economics is not a freestanding discipline, regardless of how it is regarded today. It is a discipline that can only be understood when linked to politics, since the wealth of a nation rests on both these foundations, and it can best be understood by someone who approaches it from a moral standpoint, since economics makes significant assumptions about both human nature and proper behavior. tags: crisis

Note: No matter who achieves victory in November’s U.S. presidential elections, it is certain the next administration will have to confront the growing problems posed by Iran. The Iranian nuclear program continues despite widespread international objection, and its sponsorship of terrorist organizations, such as Hezbollah, poses a constant threat. Furthermore, Iran’s regional and global influence is potent and growing, in part due to its vast energy resources, making Iran’s ambitions even more pressing. In order to provide answers to these questions, as well as offer a unique perspective on the domestic sociopolitical landscape of Iran, the Nixon Center hosted a panel discussion entitled “Iran: Questions for the Next Administration” on September 24. tags: iran

Posted by BAHRAMERAD, at 01:05PM 10/02/08 : Border Chief: No Evidence of Iranian Sleeper Cells in U.S.
Note: "If Iran has sleeper cells here, "we'd be doing something about it," says the head of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, contradicting frequent assertions that the Islamic regime has secret agents in the U.S. poised to attack domestic targets in retaliation for American or Israeli air strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities. U.S. intelligence officials have said that Iran-backed Hezbollah "retains the capability to strike in the U.S." as FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III told Congress in 2005, or that it might launch attacks on U.S. targets "if it feels its Iranian patron is threatened," as John D. Negroponte put it when he was Director of National Intelligence in 2006. But evidence that Iran has anything more than fundraising efforts remains scant. tags: iri
