Britain Threatens to Take Fattest Children Away from Parents
Note: Dangerously overweight children will have to be taken from their parents and put into care because of Britains worsening obesity epidemic, council leaders have warned. One million children will be clinically obese within four years on current trends, storing up future problems from heart disease, strokes, high blood pressure and diabetes.

Cloned Puppies: Sure, Theyre Cute, But at What Cost?
Note: When skin cells from a dead pit bull named Booger gave rise to five healthy-looking puppies with a $50,000 price tag, it marked the formal beginning of a commercial dog-cloning industry. But for all the attention given to these and other clones, little was paid to the behind-the-scenes science.

Google Investing Over $10 Million in Geothermal Energy
Note: Geothermal energy has finally hit the big time. Google.org, the philanthropic arm of Google, announced today that it is investing $10.25 million in an energy technology called Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS). The funding will also go towards geothermal resource mapping, information tools, and a geothermal energy policy agenda.

Note: I checked out the bank of beat up Gateways with vagabond keyboards in the corner. I wiggle the mouse, and up pops the Ubuntu Heron! Wow!The neat part is that other people are actually using them.

LEAKED: First Shots of iPhone Nike+ Interface
Note: Weve known that Nike+ has long been in development for the iPhone. Now were finally getting a peek at the first shots of the interface. From what we can skim, Nike+ users will get all of the nifty performance graphs right on the phone (before this stuff was available on the web only). But the biggest improvement may be Goggle Maps support

Note: ...research is leaning on the side of it being good for you. It lowers the risk of Parkinsons disease and Type 2 diabetes. It mediates depression. But the benefits are dose-related. Coffee does increase your blood pressure, but only for a few minutes.

Note: Spectators at Beijings Olympic swimming pool have witnessed some outlandish goings-on over the last couple of weeks: 25 world records have fallen, compared with eight at the Athens Olympics four years ago. Seven of them were broken by one swimmer, Michael Phelps of the US.

Olympic BMX Motocross obstacle course (GRAPHIC)
Note: Four U.S. riders - three men, one woman - will compete in the BMX Motocross cycling events in Beijing. Riders reach speeds of 40 mph and heights of 12 to 15 feet above the big ramps. Runs last about 35 dirty seconds.
