Digg’s Recent Bans and the Limits of Crowdsourcing
Note: Several weeks ago, Digg made online headlines when it banned several dozen of its users, some of which were among its most highly ranked contributors (including Reg “Zaibatsu” Saddler, who by some metrics was the #3 Digg user of all time).

Earth From Above Photography Exhibition Shows Unique Perspectives Of Planet (PHOTOS)
Note: "Have you noticed significant changes in how the Earth looks from above since you began this project several decades ago? I've seen the impact of man. I've been flying and photographing for 15 years now -- it's just long enough to see the impact, to see the deterioration."

Note: In what could be a first in the world, a fish species known as cichlids has been discovered by scientists in the act of splitting into two distinct species in Lake Victoria, Africas largest lake and one of the worlds biggest fresh water bodies.

Note: Plastic spheres block sunlight and cancer. If you make a mess, just cover it up. Thats the theory behind the Department of Water and Powers latest project in Los Angeles, which aims to prevent the formation of a carcinogen in two drinking-water sources, the Ivanhoe [pictured] and Elysian reservoirs.

Note: Whenever we get introduced to a site that features some kind of “digital fingerprinting technology” to power a music recommendation engine, it’s hard not to be skeptical.

NASA - NASA Spacecraft Finds the Sun is Not a Perfect Sphere
Note: The sun is the biggest and therefore smoothest object in the solar system, perfect at the 0.001% level because of its extremely strong gravity, says study co-author Hugh Hudson of UC Berkeley. Measuring its exact shape is no easy task.

Note: Google is currently doing a retrospective of their famously sparse search results pages and if you look at it from ten years ago to today, you will notice some marked differences.

Intuit Embraces Layoffs, Social Media & Google Advice
Note: Layoffs at Intuit are under way. Approximately 600 people will be let go. “We invest where the puck is going to be”, said Brad Smith, Intuit’s CEO. He plans to reinvest whatever savings accrue from the cuts into online software initiatives.

NeuroSky Unveils Brainwave-Controlled Game
Note: NeuroSky, which develops wearable bio-sensors, is showing off a brainwave-controlled video game as a concept at this week’s Tokyo Game Show 2008. The game, developed in conjunction with Square Enix, involves NeuroSky’s commercial headset, which reportedly looks like regular headphones and is capable of working with several different gaming platforms.

Note: The official Google blog has released information about what Web users searched for most often last night during the second presidential debate between Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama. Searchers wanted to find the definitions of words like “morass,” “commodity,” “junket” and “cronyism,” among others.
