Explores the effect culture has on a special group of people,
the hearing impaired.
The first stage of the work is a result of six months co-habitation with a minority group of deaf
and mute people in Bangkok.
Thai society is very much based on hierarchy and a simple gesture such as a Wai (a form of greeting), often determines the social status of the parties involved. A modest and, to many, an illusive people, Thai’s are renowned for keeping their feelings to them selves.
This work with Bangkok’s deaf is therefore very revealing. It is a ballet of emotions set amongst the streets of one of Asia’s busiest cities. Not conscious of their origins or what their culture expects of them, the characters run their own businesses, they interact vigorously and let their natural emotions come to the surface. They support each other, they congregate in the centers, conducting vibrant businesses and lives.
Is this what Thai’s are really like, without curtain of cultural standards and restrictions?
Does a perceived disability tear down the cultural mores?
With this exciting premise in mind, It's very Challenging exploring this concept in other countries and cities, with our ever changing cultural and social behavier in a ever fast world, London, Southern Italy, Mongolia, China and Argentina are in process of the making.
Some work has been completed in Marrakech Morocco, where marked differences have already been seen. in a Muslim Culture , being deaf tends to take away from life, Unless in very rare situations were famillies and communities are involved and care and protect .
The deaf were chosen, as sign language is indeed one of the World’s truly international languages. It helps transcend cultures and it enables to continue this important work in across a time and distance.
