Next Michael Moore Film Goes Out For Free
Note: Starting on Sept. 23, Michael Moore will distribute his next movie, “Slacker Uprising,” online for free. The film follows Moore’s 2004 62-city tour of college campuses in the U.S. to encourage young viewers to elect John Kerry president. The film will be available in North America for three weeks at Slackeruprising.com.

National Geographic Prepares Mobile Site
Note: National Geographic Ventures has formed a mobile division that will provide video programming, games and other content to wireless phones. The company announced that it will launch its mobile content site in October.

Comcast, Panasonic Demo Interactive Cable
Note: At the CEDIA Expo in Denver this week, Comcast and Panasonic are demonstrating a 50-inch plasma TV with built-in tru2way technology linked interactively with the local Comcast cable system. Bob Perry, senior vice president with Panasonic Display Company, said, “A tru2way television is actually a computer of sorts. When you activate your television on a local cable TV system, it downloads a Java application that executes on the TV.”

ESPN Moving Personalities Into Virtual World Realm
Note: The New York Times reports that ESPN plans to move into virtual worlds by merging video game graphics with its real-life sports anchors. Working with Electronic Arts, ESPN would allow its commentators to interact with three-dimensional virtual players as they talk about upcoming games or matches.

U.S. Internet Traffic Grows By 53% From Mid-2007
Note: Compared with the same period, Internet traffic in the U.S. increased by 53% from mid-2007 to mid-2008. That figure, while still high, represents a dip from the 61% recorded for the previous 12-month span. According to Web tracking firm TeleGeography, Web service providers have kept the pace by providing more bandwidth, and long-haul Internet traffic uses only 29% of the available bandwidth.

Microsoft To Cut Xbox 360 Price
Note: Microsoft announced today that it will cut the price of its base Xbox 360 console from $279 to $199. That will make it the least expensive new-generation console on the market. A Microsoft executive said, “There’s a huge audience that aren’t willing to pay more than $200.”

EBay’s WorldofGood Focuses On Social Change
Note: Online ecommerce and auction site eBay has launched WorldofGood.com, a site devoted to selling goods “to build a sustainable future for people and the planet.” The site offers fixed-price goods and services with social impact in mind. Independent third-party organizations, including Rainforest Alliance and Co-op America, will screen sellers and verify the products they offer. WorldofGood.com items will receive cross-listings on the main eBay site.

Yahoo, Verizon Renew Partnership
Note: Yahoo and Verizon Communications have renewed their working relationship. Under the deal announced on Wednesday, Verizon high-speed Internet subscribers will have the opportunity to use a cobranded Verizon-Yahoo portal that includes Yahoo’s search, email and instant-messaging services. Verizon users also have Microsoft or AOL as options, but Yahoo will remain as the first option.

Comcast Launches Fancast Store
Note: Comcast has launched Fancast Store, offering more than 3,000 downloadable TV shows and movies for rent or purchase. The store puts Fancast in direct competition with Apple’s iTunes.com and Amazon.com, among others.

Chinese Report: Millions Addicted To “Unhealthy” Games
Note: According to a state report released last week, about four million Chinese youths are addicted to the Internet, mainly due to “unhealthy” games. The Beijing Times said “Internet-addicted teenagers” make up about 10% of China’s Web users under 18. Officials have called for strict monitoring of Web-based games that have illegal or inappropriate content.

NBC Offers Fall Sneak Peek Via Hulu
Note: NBC is giving Hulu.com users a sneak peek at some of its fall shows, streaming them before they debut on the network. That preview will include the series premiere of “Knight Rider” and the season premieres of “Chuck,” “Life” and “Lipstick Jungle” for a week before they make their network appearances.

Note: The world’s largest phone maker has announced plans to roll out Comes With Music, a new mobile music service in the UK next month, followed by a broader release in continental Europe and Asia next year. Comes With Music will pit Nokia directly against Apple and its iTunes store

Philips Announces Net TV Launch Plans
Note: Philips will release its “Net TV” portal sometime next year. The service requires a special chip set added to a TV, allowing for direct streaming of Web videos to the screen. Philips says it’s now in the process of lining up content providers for Net TV and plans to launch it first in Germany and The Netherlands.

Note: MSN Video and MSN Mobile have added videos from the auto site WebRidesTV. The site’s original video content – including series like “The Super Lap Challenge,” “Auto Show Blitz” and “Profiled” will be available on MSN’s English and Spanish language mobile platforms – MSN Mobile and MSN Latino. WebRidesTV will update its content every 48 hours for the MSN portal.
